In the spring of 2017 Tess became one of three UNC Charlotte students ever to win a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is a federally endowed scholarship and is considered the most prestigious undergraduate award in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater is an extremely competitive scholarship with only 240 total recipients chosen from more than a thousand applicants from colleges & universities across the nation.
Since her freshman year, Tess has been working in the research lab of Dr. Shan Yan in the Department of Biological Sciences where she studies DNA damage response and repair. Her work in the lab has inspired her to pursue a career in research. After graduating from UNC Charlotte she plans on pursuing a PhD in molecular biology and eventually to become a government researcher.
